The fiber for this yarn was produced by our flocks of natural colored Wensleydale sheep. The colors change as the sheep get older, so black lambs can be gray or silver as adults. Tail-spinning is a very lengthy and challenging process. After the sheep is sheared, the fleece is skirted to remove any bits of straw, hay, sticks feed or dirt. I usually wash each fleece gently. When dry the parts of the fleece that have the longest curly locks are selected so we can pull just the best locks out of each fleece. These locks can be anywhere from 5 or 6″ to 11″long and are carefully pulled by their curly tips, one at a time, and arranged for spinning. They may be spun on or with another strand of yarn, or they may be added one after the other to form a single yarn. Sometimes an extra small strand is added to stabilize it. It can take up to 5 hours to get a small bit of yardage, so it is very time and labor intensive.
This skein weighs 3.9 ounces and is about 62 yards in length. There are other similar skeins but none are the exact same since every one is unique. We have many colors of fleeces, and even some pulled locks available. This yarn serves as a lovely embellishment on many different projects, boot toppers, hats, lovely shawls, cowls, etc. Some people wear them as is around their necks – they are very warm and look cool! Tailspun makes a great addition to any weaving, and can be as versatile as your imagination. Winter is coming – you might want to make some warm mitts or a hat!
